Mind Strength – A Leadership Lesson for Complainers
Jul 27, 2026
Going into my senior year of high school, my friends and I were complaining that we didn't have black uniforms. Like a bunch of whiny high school kids with no perspective, we thought we would look so much cooler under the Friday night lights if we had black jerseys.
We let our coach know of our desire, and Coach Favero said, "Great, go make it happen."
"Go raise the money, or reach out to Nike with your idea and get it done."
Neither my buddies nor I picked up the phone one time or sent a single fundraising text.
Two things come to mind from this story:
1. As a leader, if somebody complains about the way things are, put them in charge.
- Rather than wasting his time listening to our complaints or making it his responsibility, our coach put us in charge. It stopped right there.
2. If your desire or goal isn't strong enough, you won't be willing to do what it takes to make it happen.
- In this case, we liked the idea of black jerseys, but we weren't willing to do the necessary work to get them.
This silly little story and memory of mine happens more often than not. As a leader, put the complainer in charge of the project. They'll either hit a dead end because their desire isn't strong enough, or you'll end up with some new black jerseys.
Either way, it's a win.
